Why You Need Website Maintenance
If you happened to stumble upon or read the bio section, you will know that my focus is on helping you figure out what can be done by yourself, versus what might be best left to someone specialized or a specialized entity. First let’s get a little background information on what website maintenance is. Website maintenance can vary from anything to do with the backend of a website such as the cPanel, server, speed, cache; and all the way up to the coding and other guidelines such as HTML compliant and correctness. The maintenance, depending on the type of business may require monthly monitoring or random updates to ensure that a site is up to the latest standards and specifications.
Quite frankly, you need website maintenance because it goes deeper than just at the background level. Website maintenance can also be considered “management” or keeping your site fresh and active. Unfortunately many people whether they are bloggers, small business owners, corporations and everything in between; have a website built and then let it sit and age and act only as a “white page listing.” This in essence does what it needs to do, but it only does about a sixteenth of what it could be doing. Website maintenance ongoing will allow you to update relevant facts and information, or even run promotions and specials. Finding ways to engage your visitors and actually getting visitors is essential to growing your authority and trust. As a webmaster, you must know how to do this and if it’s a little past your skill level, you may seek to hire a website maintenance company, provided that you can do so on your budgetary constraints.
The View of the Outsider
When you look at your website you have to understand that how it looks might not always project professionalism. What looked great and was the industry standard 5 years ago is now virtually extinct and seems out of date. While it will still do what it needs to, it will make you appear less; well – “Professional.” What most people and businesses fail to do when they visit their own website, is step outside and think about how would they perceive that same website when they went to it looking for X, Y, or Z services or products. You’ve done it hundreds of times; gone to a search engine or some other way looking to do some research on a business or product. Once you landed on their homepage it immediately impacted you. Whether you thought it was amazing and easy to read, or kind of dull, outdated and in need of the information being better presented to the visitor it certainly left a mark with you. If you didn’t care for it and thought it was rather unprofessional, did you immediately hit the back button or choose not to include them as your possible options? This is where you will begin to understand why website maintenance ongoing is so important.
Now that you see the value, and have some background information on exactly what maintenance of a website can do, it’s important to make sure you take these aspects into consideration. It’s not always practical to have a full time IT and web staff, but learning how to do some things yourself, or outsourcing some others to a monthly fee can be worthwhile and have a serious impact on your leads, conversion and overall revenue if you are a business. Furthermore if you are trying to establish yourself as an authority in your niche, such as a blog; this is where it will also come into play. An updated website that is free of malware, coding issues, and user friendly will pay for itself many times over if you utilize it correctly.
